Preparation of the Third National Communication (TNC) and other new information to the UNFCCC

 

 

In partnership with Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, funded by Global Environment Facility, the project aims to enable India undertake activities to prepare  its Third National Communication to the UNFCCC according to the guidelines provided by the Conference of Parties (COP) for non-Annex 1 countries (17/CP.8)

  • The process of developing national communications has triggered large-scale networking, capacity-building and the involvement of research organizations and various government departments.
  • India’s BUR-1 submitted to UNFCCC in January 2016. ICA completed successfully in May 2017.
  • BUR-2 submitted to UNFCCC in December 2018. ICA completed in COP 25, Madrid (December 2019).
  • In BUR-2 a comparison of methane inventory using top-down method was presented. A proactive approach that is first for GHG inventory of any developing country in the world. 
  • Developing Mid-century, long-term low-GHG emission development strategies have already been commissioned.
  • Developing a roadmap for achieving four NDC goals (3,5,7 & 8) are underway.
  • A portfolio of 91 studies is being managed under the project. Most studies are in an advanced stage.
  • National GHG inventory for all five sectors have been prepared and published for the year 2010 in BUR-1 and 2014 in BUR-2. Trend analysis over 2000-2014 also completed and presented in BUR-2.
  • Six publications (Samanvay, Parampara, Climate Change and water resources, Biodiversity and Climate Change, Sustainable Lifestyle) developed and distributed
Looking to the Future
  • Completion and synthesis of all ongoing studies being carried out by more than 60 institutions for preparation of the Third National Communication.
  • Preparation of all chapters (National Circumstances, National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Information, Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation, Constraints, Gaps and Related Financial, Technical and Capacity Needs) of Third National Communication.
  • Submission of Third National Communication to UNFCCC.
  • Terminal Evaluation of the project and successful closure.
